Wait staff for hire and catering servers for weddings and parties
To hire wait staff, post the date, the service style, your city and the guest count. Plan one server per 10 to 15 guests for a plated dinner and one per 25 to 30 for a cocktail party. Private event servers typically earn $20 to $45 an hour, and GigList ranks local servers who are free on your date.

Screening questions to ask
Add these to your gig. Every applicant answers before you talk.
- Q1 How many plated weddings or dinners did you serve this year?
- Q2 Can you carry three plates and serve from the correct side?
- Q3 Do you have black service clothes and non slip shoes?
- Q4 Can you stay through breakdown, usually one hour after the last guest?
Hiring servers without a staffing agency
Most hosts who search for servers for hire end up calling a catering staffing agency. That works, but the agency price is the server wage plus its margin, and a four hour minimum per person is common. If you already have a caterer for the food and only need people on the floor, posting the shift yourself is usually the cheaper route. You pay each server directly, and your GigList plan covers every gig you post in the month, whether it is one birthday party or a full wedding season.
The headcount drives the budget more than the hourly rate. A 120 guest plated wedding needs 8 to 12 servers, while the same 120 guests at a cocktail reception need 4 or 5. Buffets sit in between: plan one server per 20 to 25 guests to restock, clear and pour. Add one lead server for any event over 75 guests so someone owns the timeline, the kitchen calls and the toasts. Then add the hours: call time before guests arrive plus at least one hour of breakdown after.
Wedding wait staff need one thing party servers often do not: timed course service. Ask in your screening questions whether they have worked synchronized courses, cake cutting and a champagne toast pour. For a backyard party, a friendly server who keeps plates moving and the trash under control is often all you need, and the rate reflects that.
Serving drinks as well? Pair your servers with a bartender from our page on how to hire a bartender, and add setup crew, check in staff or a captain when you hire event staff for a larger date. Our event staffing checklist covers ratios for every service style, and the hospitality gigs category shows what other hosts post.
