Event Security Cost and Security Prices for Events
October 14, 2026
Describe your gig and see matching local talent before you sign up
Event security in the US typically costs $30 to $60 an hour per unarmed guard, $45 to $90 for an armed officer and $50 to $110 for an off duty police officer, usually with a 4 hour minimum per guard. Two unarmed guards for a 5 hour wedding come to about $300 to $600. Plan one guard per 100 guests, or one per 50 when alcohol is served.
That is the budget answer. The rest of this page is for the person signing the quote: a couple with a 180 guest reception and an open bar, a parent hosting a graduation party that got shared on Instagram, an office manager running the company holiday party at a rented venue. It covers what each type of guard costs, worked examples for common events, how many guards you need, and the line items that push a quote up.
Event security cost per hour
Security companies price event work per guard, per hour. The rate depends on the city, the date, whether the guard carries a firearm and how much notice you give. These are typical US ranges for 2026, before travel or holiday surcharges.
| Type of security | Typical rate per hour | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Unarmed event guard | $30 to $60 | Front door, guest list, crowd watch, parking, calling for help |
| Armed security officer | $45 to $90 | Cash handling, high profile guests, venues with a known risk |
| Off duty police officer | $50 to $110 | Booked through the department, often required by city permits |
| Security lead or supervisor | $40 to $75 | Runs a team of three or more, radio, incident log |
| Crowd manager or door staff (not a guard) | $20 to $35 | Ticket scanning, wristbands, directing guests, where state rules allow |
The gap between what a guard earns and what you pay is the company. Federal wage data puts the median security guard wage at around $18 an hour, and the security company adds payroll taxes, insurance, licensing, scheduling and its margin. That is normal and, in many states, required: guards in California, Texas and Florida, among others, must work through a licensed security company rather than freelance for a private host.
How much does event security cost for a wedding, party or company event?
Most private events need one to four unarmed guards for five to seven hours, which puts the total between about $120 and $1,600. Here is how that works out for common bookings, using mid range rates and the usual 4 hour minimum.
| Event | Typical security | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
| Backyard party, 60 to 80 guests, beer and wine | 1 unarmed guard, 4 hours | $120 to $240 |
| Graduation or 21st birthday, 100 to 150 guests, shared online | 2 unarmed guards, 5 hours | $300 to $600 |
| Wedding reception, 180 guests, open bar | 2 to 3 unarmed guards, 6 hours | $360 to $1,080 |
| Company holiday party, 250 guests at a rented venue | 3 guards plus a lead, 6 hours | $780 to $1,530 |
| Product launch with equipment left overnight | 2 guards for 5 hours, 1 overnight for 10 hours | $600 to $1,200 |
New Year's Eve, July 4th and graduation weekends often carry a holiday rate of 1.5 times the normal price, and big metros such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago sit at the top of each range. Booking with less than a week's notice can add a rush fee or simply leave you with nobody available.
How many security guards do I need for an event?
Start with one guard per 100 guests for a calm private event with known guests, and one per 50 when alcohol is served, the crowd is young, or the event was shared publicly. Then add a guard for each extra post that needs a person on it the whole night, such as a parking lot or a second entrance.
| Situation | Starting ratio |
|---|---|
| Seated dinner, invited guests only, no bar | 1 guard per 100 to 150 guests, often none under 75 |
| Wedding or party with an open bar | 1 guard per 50 to 75 guests |
| Young crowd, event posted on social media | 1 guard per 50 guests, plus one at the door the whole night |
| Separate parking lot or second entrance | Add 1 guard per post |
| Three guards or more | Add a lead who runs the team |
Check your venue contract and any city permit before you settle the number. Many venues set a minimum number of guards above a guest count, and some cities require off duty police for events with alcohol sales. Those rules decide the floor, and the ratios above help you decide whether to go higher.
What pushes an event security quote up
When two quotes for the same night differ by a few hundred dollars, it is almost always one of these:
- Minimum hours. A 4 hour minimum per guard is common, and some companies use 5 or 6 on Saturdays. A guard you need for 3 hours still bills 4.
- Arrival and load out. Guards usually arrive 30 to 60 minutes before doors and stay until the last guest leaves, so a 4 hour reception is often a 5 or 6 hour booking.
- Armed versus unarmed. An armed officer can cost 30 to 50 percent more, and fewer companies offer it. Most private parties and weddings do not need one.
- Holiday and short notice rates. Expect 1.5 times the rate on the biggest nights and a rush fee for bookings inside a week.
- Insurance paperwork. Venues often ask the security company for a certificate of insurance naming them. Most companies include it, but a few charge for a custom certificate.
- Travel. Locations outside the metro area can add a mileage or travel fee per guard.
How much does an off duty police officer cost for a private event?
Off duty police usually cost $50 to $110 an hour per officer, set by the department rather than negotiated, with a minimum of 3 or 4 hours. Most departments run this as an extra duty or secondary employment program, and some add an administrative fee and a vehicle charge. You book it by calling the department's secondary employment office with the date, the address and the guest count. Hosts choose police when a permit requires it, when the event is on a public street, or when they want the strongest deterrent at the door.
Security company or booking guards directly
For guards, the licensed company is usually the employer, so the real choice is between a big agency with a sales team and a smaller licensed provider you find and book yourself. The bigger agency costs more and is easier to reach on a Sunday. The smaller provider is often cheaper and more flexible on minimums, but you have to check the license and the insurance yourself.
Whichever you pick, ask the same three questions before you sign: the state license number of the company, who the guard on site works for, and a certificate of liability insurance naming you or the venue. If your company books security, catering and rentals for events every month, it is worth using a system to track certificates of insurance from every vendor so nothing expires before the next date.
How to book event security without agency markup
On GigList you post one gig with the date, the venue, the guest count, the hours, whether alcohol is served and how many guards you need. The screening questions ask each applicant for the state license number, the licensed employer and proof of insurance before you talk to anyone. Licensed security providers who cover your city and are free on your date rank first, you agree the rate in messages and pay the provider directly. Your plan covers every gig you post that month, so there is no fee per hire and no markup on the guard's rate. Start on the hire event security page, which lists the rate cards, the shift sheet to paste into your post and the screening questions.
Security is rarely the only thing you are booking. If the party has a bar, see how to hire a bartender and size the bar to your guest count, and for check in, coat check and setup you can hire event staff on the same account. Our event staffing checklist covers the ratios for servers and crew, and GigList pricing shows the flat plans.
Event security cost questions
Do I need security for a party?
You likely need security if the guest list is long or partly unknown, the party was shared on social media, alcohol is served, the crowd is young, or there are gifts and equipment on site. Some venues and permits require it above a set guest count. For a small dinner with invited guests, a host at the door is usually enough.
How much is a security guard for 4 hours?
An unarmed security guard for 4 hours usually costs $120 to $240, since most companies bill $30 to $60 an hour with a 4 hour minimum. An armed officer for the same 4 hours runs about $180 to $360, and an off duty police officer about $200 to $440, plus any department or vehicle fee.
Do you tip security guards at a wedding?
Tipping security is not expected the way it is for bartenders and servers, but it is a kind gesture when the guards handled a difficult guest or stayed late. Couples who tip usually give $20 to $50 per guard in cash at the end of the night, or add it to the final payment to the company.
Is event security cheaper on weekdays?
Often, yes. Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest for security companies, so weekday and daytime events are easier to staff and some providers relax the minimum hours. Holiday weekends, New Year's Eve and graduation season are the most expensive dates, so book those at least three to four weeks ahead.
