"The missing link between Duke Ellington and Public Enemy" - Rolling Stone
Composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, poet, and self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn, Sun Ra led his "Intergalactic Arkestra" of thirty-plus musicians in a career that ranged from boogie-woogie and swing to be-bop, free jazz, fusion, and New Age music until his death in 1993.
The Sun Ra Arkestra still perform today under the direction of long-time Sun Ra collaborator and alto-saxophonist Marshall Allen who is 92 years old this year. The Big Band play fully dressed in intergalactic garb influenced by the spirit of Ancient Egypt and will perform a selection of Sun Ra classics.
Gilles Peterson has just compiled a selection of Sun Ra Arkestra tracks for Strut Records.
