Carré Kwong Callaway is the force behind the band Queen Kwong. The multi-instrumentalist was discovered as a teenager by Trent Reznor and since then Callaway has gone through the growing pains of becoming a confident artist, admitting that she has only recently become the songwriter and the musician she has strived to be. Known for her "hard-to-define" songs, prolific lyrics, and chaotic live performances, she has become a polarizing and pioneering figure in the modern rock scene. Her second full length record "Love Me To Death" (produced by longtime collaborator Joe Cardamone of The Icarus Line), not only continues Callaway's musical idiosyncrasies as a composer, but brings her writing to a whole new level. The record’s eleven songs not only reveal exactly who Callaway is, but her very essence is felt in each of them: in the riffing guitar of the title-track, the grunginess of “Raptures” and pulsating and hypnotic bass lines of “One Lung.” She shows sensual fragility in “Third World Girl” and tenderness and melancholy in "Old Faithful” while the proto-punk, turbulent "Fool's Gold" is aggressive and fearless. The record ends with the avant-garde, experimental “Sun Of Life” one of her heaviest songs to date. And while each track is remarkably diverse, together, they form a coherent whole.
“Her songs and stage show are a blatant protest at the “sanitization” of Rock in recent years. Queen Kwong’s work stands out from the sea of rubbish I keep hearing on the radio. Carré embodies the true and uncompromising spirit of Rock. This LA based musician’s unwillingness to play it safe is rare and admirable. Someone very wise once taught me the importance of metaphorically, “passing on the torch”. I say with utmost sincerity that Queen Kwong deserves that torch more than any performer I’ve come across in the last decade.” Roger O’Donnell (The Cure)
“Powerful, creepy, beautiful... Callaway has often been compared to the likes of Iggy Pop or Patti Smith. That’s fair (and flattering), but if she keeps building and changing, Callaway’s music will allow no comparisons.” BUST Magazine
"There is no elaborate stage production, no gimmicks and no pretentiousness; Queen Kwong is nothing but a really good rock show from a really good rock band” MTV Iggy
“One of the coolest bands on the planet...Queen Kwong has exceeded the hype.” Kerrang
“One of our favorite musicians.” Juxtapoz
“Nowadays Rock music is short on radical rebels and now it has a five star radical rebel in Carré Callaway. It is impossible to put her into any specific genre or box no matter how hard you try. So just give up trying and surrender to her majesty Queen Kwong!” 3 Songs & Out
