One band that has utilised the lockdown period well is Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - upon announcing a new album, Shyga! The Sunlight Mound, set for release in February next year, their latest single is another hallucinatory acquisition to a long line of memorable tracks that ensure gigs will return with a bang and live music continues to thrive.
‘Tally-Ho’ keeps with the usual trend of complex riffs and melodies that is further improving and evolving each time the band release a new accretion. Immediately gripping your ears with another sing-able and embedding introductory riff, the track continues to electrify throughout with the band’s ever-impressive musical ability firing from all angles, ensuring this song will slot effortlessly into their indelible discography.
Lyrically, this band are also experts at cleverly weaving together poetic stories which almost make indulging in substances sound like an enjoyable activity to be done on a Sunday, which is testimony to lead singer Jack McEwen and his way with words. A particular example of his clever lyricism is ensuring that lines like “matadors, sycamore, furthermore” hits the ear well and flow like clockwork.
February 5th cannot come soon enough - if this is what the rest of the album will have a similar sound to - and it'll be another thing to look forward to during these torrid and dark times. By the time this is released, it will be their fourth album and this band are still fresh, smart, interesting and bring a resounding smile of approval to now-expectant faces. Long may it continue as the flowers and fauna of the psychedelic scene continue to bloom amongst even the darkest the world can throw at it.
